Lessons Learned Over the Years
The following articles have been written by current or past members of ASD or people related to searches ASD responded to. As the group has grown older, it has gathered these experiences due to many search and rescue missions. By sharing with the greater internet community, hopefully these lessons will remain well-grounded by the learned, and not blind to the newcomer.
- "A Remarkable Urban Track", by Roxanne Dunn. Chris Dover and Targhee track a missing child through an urban, well populated area. Bozeman Police assisted.
- "Alzheimers Patient Found", by Roxanne Dunn. Good use of resources, combined training, search strategy and teamwork all pay off when an elderly man is found.
- "Lost Hunters Stillwater County", By Vikki Fenton-Anderberg and Janne Anderberg. A father and son pair used their heads and stayed put. Absaroka Search Dogs teams were able to locate them quickly.
- "Lost Billings Hunter", By Mike Stark, Billings Gazette Gordon Longenecker was lost for two days in the Blind Bridger Creek area, and was found by Winda handled by Mark with Clay as a flanker.
- "Lost Father and Son Hunting Near Pompey's Pillar", by Roxanne Dunn. With a vehicle to start from, but no uncontaminated scent article, teams were forced to grid off the search area, and work into the wind.
- "Missouri River Breaks Search", by Associated Press. The part of Montana where a Minnesota man was going deer hunting is beautiful but unforgiving.
- "Searching Big Water", by Chris Dover. On Thursday, August 21, 1997, a 16-year-old boy disappeared, and presumably drowned, while floating with friends on the Yellowstone River near Billings, Montana.
- "Upper Yellowstone River, A July to Remember", by Chris Dover An account of a water search on the Upper Yellowstone river in 1998 by Swiftwater Rescuer and Absaroka Search Dogs handler Chris Dover.
