Absaroka Search Dogs adheres to a rigid standard of performance for search dog teams. The handlers must meet certain qualifications, and the dogs must meet certain qualifications. Once these standards are met, which is determined by a test performed by senior members of the team, a dog becomes operational. Until then, the dog and handler are in training, and cannot respond to a real emergency as a unit. During this training time however, the handler is welcome to respond to calls as a flanker, or assistant to an operational dog team.
